National Cremation Placement Day will bring communities together October 17 to honor these lives and create lasting legacies.

COLD SPRING, Minn., Sept. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — More than 20 million family members and friends have loved ones whose cremated remains are kept in homes or passed down through generations without a permanent place to be remembered. The first-ever National Cremation Placement Day will take place Saturday, October 17, 2026, creating a national opportunity to bring greater awareness to permanent placement and memorialization of cremated remains. Established and registered by Coldspring, the observance will take place annually on the third Saturday in October.

Created in recognition of the 150th anniversary of cremation in America, National Cremation Placement Day brings the memorialization community together to educate families about permanent placement, remembrance and the role these practices can play in creating a lasting legacy.

Funeral homes, cemeteries, monument dealers and industry partners are encouraged to participate by sharing information, hosting local observances and creating meaningful opportunities for families to gather and remember loved ones. Through education, remembrance and community connection, the initiative aims to:

• Help families find relief from long-term uncertainty
• Prevent future mishandling or abandonment of cremated remains
